The Haryana government has temporarily suspended mobile internet and bulk SMS services in at least 10 villages in Ambala district from December 6 to December 9, as part of measures to maintain public order. The suspension, ordered under Section 20 of the Telecommunications Act, 2023, affects areas such as Dangdehri, Lohgarh, Manakpur, Dadiyana, Bari Ghel, Lhars, Kalu Majra, Devi Nagar, Saddopur, Sultanpur, and Kakru village. According to reports, internet services have been disrupted in a total of 11 villages.
This move aims to curb the spread of misinformation and ensure peace in the region, especially as tensions rise with the ongoing farmers’ protest. However, essential services like banking and mobile recharges will remain functional during the suspension period. The ban will remain in effect until 11:59 PM on December 9.
The suspension of internet services comes as a group of 101 farmers from the Bhartiya Kisan Parishad (BKP) and other farmer organizations plan to march to Delhi, continuing their protest that began on November 25. The farmers are demanding a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops, debt relief, pensions for farmers and farm laborers, and a halt to increases in electricity tariffs.
Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher has clarified that the march will be peaceful, and the farmers have no intention of breaking any barricades. In an interview with news agency ANI, Pandher expressed hope that the government would allow the protest to proceed peacefully, emphasizing that farmers remain open to dialogue.
The suspension of mobile services underscores the state’s commitment to preventing unrest as the protest intensifies, while efforts continue to find a resolution to the long-standing demands of the agricultural community.
