Haryana Government’s Major Decision to Benefit Farmers: Increases Average Yield Limits for Rabi Crops

In a significant move aimed at enhancing the welfare of farmers, the Haryana government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, has approved an increase in the per-acre average yield limits for Rabi crops for the year 2024-25. This decision, set to be effective during the Rabi procurement season of 2025-26, is expected to resolve the longstanding issue faced by farmers who, despite higher yields, were unable to sell their crops at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) due to restrictive yield limits. The revised limits will enable farmers to sell larger quantities of their produce at MSP, ensuring better income and financial security.

This decision follows a comprehensive study conducted by a committee formed by the state government to assess the per-acre yield limits for various Rabi crops. The committee’s recommendations were approved by CM Saini, reflecting the government’s proactive approach to addressing the challenges faced by the farming community. According to an official spokesperson, the enhanced yield limits will benefit a substantial number of farmers, particularly those cultivating barley, chickpea, sunflower, green gram (moong), and lentils (masoor).

As per the revised limits, the per-acre average yield for barley has been increased from 15 quintals to 16 quintals, while for chickpea, the limit has been raised from 5 quintals to 6 quintals per acre. The sunflower yield limit has been enhanced from 8 quintals to 9 quintals per acre, and for green gram, the limit has been increased from 3 quintals to 4 quintals per acre. In a first, the average yield for lentils has been fixed at 4 quintals per acre, providing much-needed clarity and support to lentil farmers. However, the yield limit for wheat remains unchanged at 25 quintals per acre.

The spokesperson emphasized that the decision to increase the yield limits was made after careful consideration of the committee’s findings, which highlighted the need to align the limits with the actual production capabilities of farmers. This move is anticipated to not only boost farmers’ income but also strengthen Haryana’s agricultural economy by facilitating smoother procurement processes and minimizing crop wastage.

Farmers across the state have welcomed the decision, expressing optimism that the enhanced yield limits will encourage them to adopt better farming practices and invest more in crop productivity. By allowing higher quantities of crops to be sold at MSP, the government aims to safeguard farmers against market fluctuations and ensure a stable income for them.
