Haryana Mother-Daughter Duo Honored by United Nations: A Tale of Love, Grit, and Empowerment

In an extraordinary story of perseverance, maternal love, and triumph, Harsh Sharma from Panchkula, Haryana, has transformed her differently-abled daughter, Tejaswini, into a celebrated devotional singer. Despite being 90% physically disabled, Tejaswini’s talent and resilience, combined with her mother’s unwavering dedication, have brought international recognition to their journey. On International Women’s Day, Harsh Sharma will be honored by the United Nations for her relentless efforts, marking a historic moment for India and Haryana.

Tejaswini, who has overcome significant physical challenges, has already received national accolades, including the President’s Award. Adding to her remarkable achievements, she will perform at the Indian Embassy during the UN event. This recognition not only highlights her musical prowess but also underscores the transformative power of a mother’s determination to empower her child.

Born in July 1986, Tejaswini faced immense hardships in her early years, including nine years of being bedridden due to severe health complications. Despite these obstacles, her mother Harsh introduced her to the world of devotional music. With her inability to read, write, or see, Tejaswini relied solely on her auditory senses to learn and master music. Her devotion to the art, guided by her mother’s mentorship, has touched the hearts of millions across India. Her achievements include the prestigious Roll Model of India award, presented by former President Pratibha Patil.

Harsh Sharma’s recognition at the United Nations is a monumental first for India, celebrating the role of caregivers in transforming the lives of differently-abled individuals. This honor is not only a tribute to Harsh’s selfless dedication but also a reminder of the incredible potential that lies within children when given unconditional support and love. Their story has brought immense pride to Haryana and serves as an inspiration for countless parents across the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of women empowerment, exemplified through initiatives like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, launched from Haryana’s Panipat in 2015, aligns closely with this journey. Haryana’s innovative schemes, such as the Bima Sakhi, further reinforce the state’s commitment to uplifting women and girls. Harsh Sharma has appealed to both the Prime Minister and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to introduce additional policies aimed at integrating differently-abled children into the mainstream and providing them with opportunities for growth.

Tejaswini’s remarkable achievements serve as a beacon of hope and a call to action for society. By recognizing and nurturing the potential of differently-abled individuals, communities can foster inclusivity and create an equitable future. Their story exemplifies the boundless possibilities of resilience, determination, and empowerment.

This extraordinary journey of Harsh and Tejaswini Sharma is not just a moment of pride for Haryana but an inspiration for every household in India. It is a powerful reminder that love and perseverance can overcome the greatest of challenges, paving the way for dreams to flourish.
