Haryana Sees Surge in Voter Registration Across 89 Assembly Constituencies, Except Narayangarh
As Haryana prepares for the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections on May 25, a significant increase in voter registration has been observed across 89 out of the 90 assembly constituencies over the past four months. However, in a unique case, voter numbers have decreased in Chief Minister Naib Saini’s home constituency of Narayangarh.
According to official data released recently, the total number of registered voters in Haryana has now reached 20,187,911. This includes 10,652,345 male voters, 9,423,956 female voters, 467 transgender voters, and 111,143 service voters. Additionally, the state has 150,277 disabled voters and 762 overseas (NRI) voters.
Significant Increase in Voter Registration
From January 1, 2024, to May 6, 2024, Haryana saw an addition of 353,309 voters. Advocate Hemant Kumar, a prominent election analyst and High Court lawyer, highlighted these changes, noting a substantial rise in voter numbers statewide. This period saw an increase from 19,834,602 voters in January 2024 to 20,187,911 voters in May 2024. This surge is particularly significant considering the total increase of 176,368 voters over the previous year.
The most notable increase was in the Badshahpur Assembly segment under the Gurgaon Lok Sabha constituency, which saw an addition of 34,315 voters, bringing the total to 497,864 from 463,549 as of January 1, 2024.
Decrease in Narayangarh Constituency
Contrary to the general trend, Narayangarh, part of the Ambala Lok Sabha constituency and Chief Minister Naib Saini’s home area, saw a reduction of 719 voters. In January 2024, Narayangarh had 192,887 voters, which dropped to 192,168 by May 6, 2024. The reason for this decrease remains unclear and is a matter for further investigation by the Ambala district election office, specifically the Electoral Registration Officer.
Voter Data and Analysis
Hemant Kumar conducted a detailed study based on the official voter data released on January 1, 2024, and May 6, 2024. He shared his findings with the Election Commission of India, Haryana’s Chief Electoral Officer, and Deputy Commissioners across the state, who also serve as District Election Officers.
The analysis revealed a consistent increase in voter numbers in 89 assembly constituencies. For instance, the Karnal city assembly segment, part of the Karnal Lok Sabha constituency, which is gearing up for a by-election on May 25 with Chief Minister Naib Saini as the BJP candidate, recorded an increase of 6,562 voters in the past four months.
The Election Commission of India has mandated strict guidelines for the monitoring and updating of voter lists to ensure transparency and accuracy. The recent updates and analysis reflect the diligent efforts of the election authorities in maintaining comprehensive and current voter records.
Hemant Kumar emphasized the importance of making voter data public, leading to the recent disclosure of detailed voter statistics by district election offices. This transparency helps maintain public trust and confidence in the electoral process, ensuring that every eligible voter is counted and can participate in the democratic process.
As Haryana heads to the polls, the significant increase in voter registration across the state, barring the peculiar case of Narayangarh, highlights the dynamic nature of electoral demographics. The diligent efforts of election officials and the transparency maintained in the process are pivotal in ensuring free and fair elections. The forthcoming elections will test the robustness of these measures and the engagement of the newly registered voters in the democratic process.
