Heavy Rainfall in Shimla Causes Landslides and Overflowing Drains, Authorities Take Swift Action

The monsoon rains in Shimla have started to cause significant concerns, with a heavy downpour on Monday evening leading to severe issues. Over a span of four hours, the capital city received relentless rain, resulting in a landslide near the Gurudwara close to the Old Bus Stand. Additionally, the incessant rain caused the drains in Tutikandi to overflow, posing a threat to vehicles parked alongside the road.

The heavy rainfall began around 4 PM on Monday, continuing unabated for hours. Residents reported that the continuous rain significantly lowered temperatures, adding to the discomfort. Santosh Thakur, a government employee in Shimla, mentioned that the downpour was relentless and created a chill in the air. The rain-induced landslide near the Old Bus Stand and Gurudwara area also caused the ground to collapse near the under-construction parking area close to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (Rippen) Hospital on Circular Road.

Upon receiving reports of the landslide, the District Commissioner, Anupam Kashyap, promptly arrived at the scene with senior officials at 9:45 PM. DC Anupam Kashyap assured that there were no casualties due to the landslide. Traffic was partially reopened, and the affected area was securely covered with tarpaulin to prevent further erosion. Orders were issued to the SE Public Works Department to commence relief work at the site early Tuesday morning. Additionally, measures were taken to protect the water supply pipes running through the area, with instructions given to the Jal Shakti Department officials to ensure their safety.

The swift response from the authorities highlights their preparedness to tackle such emergencies. The heavy rainfall in Shimla serves as a reminder of the potential hazards during the monsoon season and the need for vigilance and rapid action to safeguard lives and infrastructure.
