Himachal CM Orders Creation of Comprehensive Water Law to Tackle Water Issues

In a crucial move to streamline all water-related laws in Himachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has directed the formation of an umbrella act. During a high-power committee meeting held in Shimla, the CM emphasized the need for a consolidated legal framework to manage the state’s water resources effectively. He announced that an expert committee would be formed to draft this comprehensive legislation, ensuring that the state’s water challenges are addressed systematically.

Sukhu also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to protecting the interests of the people of Himachal Pradesh, especially concerning natural resources. He pointed out that the better financial management by the current administration has allowed them to release a four percent Dearness Allowance (DA) installment for government employees and pensioners. This is in addition to the seven percent DA previously given, a stark contrast to the previous BJP government, which, according to Sukhu, neglected state interests and hindered investment.

The Chief Minister underscored the importance of properly utilizing the state’s resources and vowed to pursue ongoing court cases related to them more aggressively. He further highlighted the growing concerns of climate change and global warming, emphasizing the need for studies on cloud bursts that have become increasingly frequent in the state.

Prominent figures attending the meeting included Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena, Advocate General Anup Rattan, Additional Chief Secretary Onkar Chand Sharma, Principal Secretary Devesh Kumar, Secretary to the CM Rakesh Kanwar, Chairman of the Himachal Pradesh State Water Cess Commission Amitabh Awasthi, and Law Secretary Sharad Kumar Lagwal.

This initiative by the Himachal Pradesh government marks a significant step towards strengthening water management in the state, aiming to safeguard both the environment and its people from future challenges.
