Himachal CM Proposes Committee to Frame Street Vendor Policy Amid Controversy Over Mosque Construction
Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced on Tuesday that a committee would be formed to create a street vendor policy, ensuring that licences are issued only after thorough verification of applicants’ antecedents. This comes in the wake of public protests over the illegal construction of a multi-storeyed mosque in the Sanjauli area of Shimla.
Addressing concerns raised by Shimla MLA Harish Janartha during a session of the Vidhan Sabha, CM Sukhu acknowledged the rising public outrage and emphasized the need for a balanced approach. He reiterated the state’s history of peaceful coexistence and communal harmony, stating, “Law will take its own course, and in case there is illegality, action will be taken as per rules.”
Over the past few days, protests have erupted in Shimla over the construction of the mosque, which is allegedly in violation of building norms. Sukhu suggested that a Cabinet sub-committee or a Vidhan Sabha committee would be tasked with examining the situation, adding that both the ruling and opposition parties have a responsibility to maintain peace and harmony in the state.
Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur warned that the controversy could escalate if not resolved quickly. He urged for the swift disposal of the case, stating that while anyone has the right to live and work in Himachal Pradesh, the construction of the mosque has touched on the sentiments of many. He noted that the protest was driven by public sentiment rather than political affiliations.
Rural Development Minister Anirudh Singh also weighed in, stressing that while citizens from across India are welcome in the state, proper verification processes must be in place. He raised concerns about individuals attempting to politicize or communalize the issue. Singh also called for action against anti-social elements spreading inflammatory messages on social media, warning that such actions could lead to serious law and order challenges.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Kuldeep Pathania, echoed the concerns, stating that any protests or dharnas must be managed effectively to avoid disruptions to public order.
The proposed street vendor policy and the handling of the mosque construction issue are expected to be closely watched as the state government seeks to maintain peace and address public grievances.
