Himachal CM Sukhvinder Sukhu Calls All-Party Meeting Amid Protests Over Sanjauli Mosque Construction
Amid the ongoing protests concerning the alleged illegal construction of the Sanjauli mosque, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu convened an all-party meeting to discuss the situation and ensure peace in the state. Following the meeting, CM Sukhu addressed the media, emphasizing a unified stance among all political parties on maintaining harmony in Himachal Pradesh.
Emphasis on Lawful Action and Religious Harmony
“All party representatives openly shared their perspectives, agreeing that Himachal Pradesh is a peaceful state where individuals of any religion should not face discrimination. However, it is crucial that all actions are lawful, and no statements should incite or offend religious sentiments,” said CM Sukhu during the press briefing.
Peace Proposal and Formation of a Committee
The meeting culminated in a proposal read by the Chief Minister, which called for maintaining peace and order across the region. Additionally, it was suggested that the Assembly Speaker form a committee to devise a policy for street vendors operating in the state, as part of efforts to promote lawful economic activities.
Regulation of Small Businesses
Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee Chief Pratibha Singh expressed her support for the all-party meeting and requested that the government regulate the establishment of small businesses by outsiders. “I appreciate the CM’s initiative in holding this meeting and recommend the formation of a committee that will regulate and provide opportunities for small business operators from outside the state,” Singh stated.
Protests and Police Action
Meanwhile, earlier in the day, protests erupted in Mandi as Hindu organizations demanded the demolition of an allegedly illegal structure at a mosque. Protesters attempted to breach police barricades, forcing authorities to use water cannons to disperse the crowd. The Mandi Police had ramped up security in the area after receiving intelligence reports of a planned demonstration.
The police also released footage of stone-pelting from Wednesday’s protest in Sanjauli, where clashes between protesters and law enforcement occurred. So far, eight FIRs have been registered, and several police officers, including a female officer who sustained vertebral fractures, have been injured during the unrest.
With tensions still running high, the government continues to call for calm and urges all communities to respect the law while addressing their concerns.
