Himachal Pradesh Cracks Down on Illegal Liquor: 240,438 Litres Seized (MMC in Place)
The State Tax and Excise Department in Himachal Pradesh has intensified its fight against illegal liquor operations across the state. Excise Commissioner Yunus announced a major haul of 52,440 litres of illicit liquor seized in districts like Bilaspur, Nurpur, Kangra, Sirmaur, and more.
These efforts come amidst the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) being in place for the upcoming elections. Since the MCC implementation, a staggering 240,438 litres of illicit liquor have been confiscated.
Collaborative Efforts and Stringent Actions
The department has deployed 59 task force teams and flying squads to enforce strict actions. They’ve collaborated with nodal officers from neighboring states to target illegal activity in border areas.
Recent successes include:
- Confiscating 100 boxes of illegally stored liquor in Chamba district.
- Intercepting 1,724 litres of liquor in Sirmaur by the South Zone Flying Squad.
- Destroying 1200 litres of illicit liquor production facilities in Bilaspur with local law enforcement.
- Coordinating with Punjab Excise teams to recover and destroy 2,000 litres of Lahan in Indora.
- Kangra district’s Excise team, along with the police, confiscating unpermitted country liquor.
Public Participation and Zero Tolerance
Commissioner Yunus emphasized the department’s zero-tolerance policy towards illegal liquor. To further strengthen enforcement, a dedicated control room provides 24/7 surveillance. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activity through a toll-free number, phone number, WhatsApp number, or online platform.
The department remains vigilant in collaboration with border state excise officials and the Himachal Police to ensure a free and fair election process free from the influence of illegal liquor or “freebies.”
