Himachal Pradesh Embarks on Pumped Storage Projects for Reliable Energy Supply: CM Sukhu

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced that the state government is advancing into the domain of Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) to ensure a stable and reliable energy supply, particularly from renewable sources like solar and wind energy. PSPs are highly regarded for balancing power supply, and the state’s hilly terrain is ideally suited for such projects.

In its latest meeting, the State Cabinet approved the allocation of two major projects: the 1,630 MW Renukaji Pumped Storage Project in Sirmaur district and the 270 MW Thana Plaun Pumped Storage Project in the Beas Basin of Mandi district. Both projects have been assigned to Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd (HPPCL).

Highlighting the importance of these projects, CM Sukhu said, “Pumped Storage Projects are vital for ensuring grid stability, especially during high-demand periods. These projects can mitigate power shortages by storing water in elevated reservoirs and using it to generate electricity when demand surges.” In the PSP system, water is pumped from a lower to a higher reservoir using low-cost electricity during off-peak hours and released back through turbines when electricity demand peaks.

The Renukaji Hydro Power Project will generate 40 MW of power, while the Thana Plaun Hydro Electric Project will produce 191 MW. Each project will have two powerhouses—one for regular power generation and another dedicated to the PSP system, ensuring efficient energy management.

Under the Swaran Jayanti Policy, 2021, Himachal Pradesh is prioritizing the development of PSPs. Proposals and Pre-Feasibility Reports for these projects will be solicited every six months to encourage ongoing growth in the sector. These initiatives are part of the government’s larger plan to enhance revenue generation through hydro projects and make Himachal Pradesh a leader in renewable energy.

Other key players, including SJVNL, BBMB, NTPC, and private companies, have identified numerous PSPs with a combined potential of over 20,000 MW across the state. This push for PSP development aligns with the state’s commitment to sustainable energy and economic growth.
