Himachal Pradesh Experiences Snowfall, Cold Wave, and Tourist Influx for Christmas

Himachal Pradesh is witnessing a significant weather shift with snowfall in several regions, attracting tourists and impacting daily life. Light snowflakes began falling in the state capital, Shimla, creating a mesmerizing winter wonderland. However, the snow has also caused vehicles to skid, prompting authorities to issue alerts in Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti districts. In Rohtang Pass and surrounding high-altitude areas, fresh snowfall of up to 10 centimeters has been recorded, marking the beginning of the winter season. Tourists, eager to witness snowfall, have started flocking to popular destinations like Kullu and Manali, bringing optimism to the local tourism industry. With Christmas and New Year celebrations approaching, hotel bookings have surged, and businesses are preparing for an influx of visitors.

The state’s weather department has predicted a major change in weather conditions. From December 23 onward, mid and high-altitude regions may experience light snow and rain, while the plains might see occasional drizzles. Temperatures have already started plummeting, with areas like Rohtang and other high peaks experiencing snowfall on Sunday morning. The chill in the air has intensified as a cold wave grips the state. The Meteorological Department forecasts continued snowfall and rain in parts of Himachal over the coming days, with a dry spell expected on December 25 and 26. However, fresh snowfall and rain are anticipated from December 27 onwards due to the activation of a western disturbance. On December 28, widespread snow and rain are expected across mid and high-altitude areas, while the plains could witness light rain.

The cold wave is expected to persist for six days, severely affecting daily life. Dense fog alerts have been issued for low-lying areas like Una, Hamirpur, and Bilaspur, where visibility issues are impacting transportation. In districts like Mandi, Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, and Chamba, temperatures have dipped below freezing, with several areas recording sub-zero conditions. Over the past 24 hours, regions like Mandi experienced dense fog, while cold wave conditions prevailed in Una, Kangra, and Bilaspur. Minimum temperatures dropped drastically, with Tabo recording -11.6°C, Kukumseri -4.8°C, Samdo -5.3°C, and Kalpa -1.7°C. Maximum temperatures in places like Una and Shimla were slightly warmer at 23.8°C and 17.4°C, respectively.

The snowfall and cold wave have bolstered Himachal Pradesh’s tourism industry, with visitors heading to Shimla in large numbers for Christmas celebrations. The “Queen of Hills” is already bustling with tourists from various states. Hotels, homestays, and bed-and-breakfast units are witnessing increased occupancy, and advance bookings are on the rise. The festive season has brought smiles to those associated with the tourism sector, as they prepare for even more arrivals in the coming days. Snowfall has turned Shimla and other tourist hotspots into a winter paradise, providing a perfect setting for Christmas and New Year festivities.

The changing weather conditions, coupled with the influx of tourists, highlight the dual nature of the winter season in Himachal Pradesh. While the snow attracts visitors and boosts the economy, it also brings challenges such as road safety concerns and freezing temperatures that disrupt daily activities. Local authorities have urged travelers to stay cautious and check weather updates before planning their journeys.
