Himachal Pradesh Launches State-Wide Polio Vaccination Drive Led by Health Minister Dr. Shandil
Himachal Pradesh’s Health Minister, Dr. (Col.) Dhani Ram Shandil, officially launched a comprehensive polio vaccination drive across the state on the occasion of Polio Day. The initiative aims to protect children from this debilitating disease and maintain India’s polio-free status.
Minister Shandil Champions Vaccination Efforts:
Dr. Shandil personally administered polio drops to children, highlighting the campaign’s importance and setting a strong example for the community. He lauded the tireless efforts of healthcare professionals nationwide in securing India’s polio-free certification in 2014.
Extensive Campaign Reaches Every Corner:
The campaign targets the administration of polio drops to over 590,600 children within Himachal Pradesh. To ensure widespread coverage, 5,870 vaccination centers, staffed by a dedicated team of 10,963 personnel, have been established across the state.
Prioritizing Accessibility and Reaching Underserved Populations:
Acknowledging the persistent threat of polio transmission from neighboring countries, Dr. Shandil emphasized the crucial role of regular vaccination in safeguarding children. He stressed the strategic placement of vaccination centers, ensuring easy access for children regardless of their location.
Going the Extra Mile: Reaching Beyond Centers:
The initiative extends beyond designated centers, with plans to administer polio drops at bustling locations like bus stands, district borders, transit routes, and other public gathering areas. This proactive approach aims to capture children who may not readily visit the centers.
Door-to-Door Outreach Ensures Comprehensive Coverage:
Recognizing potential gaps in coverage, Dr. Shandil highlighted the government’s commitment to conducting door-to-door campaigns. This ensures that even children who miss out on center-based vaccinations receive the essential polio drops.
Adapting to Geographic Challenges:
While the campaign encompasses the majority of Himachal Pradesh, regions experiencing extreme cold and snowfall, such as Lahaul & Spiti, Kinnaur, and Pangi (Chamba district), will have their vaccination drives postponed until April 7th, 2024. This adaptation ensures the safety and well-being of both children and healthcare personnel in these challenging weather conditions.
