Himachal Pradesh’s Financial Mess: A Legacy of BJP’s Mismanagement

MLA Sanjay Awasthi Urges Jai Ram Thakur to Seek Financial Aid for Himachal Instead of Making Baseless Allegations

Shimla: MLA Sanjay Awasthi has urged Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur to focus on securing much-needed financial assistance for Himachal Pradesh in the upcoming Union Budget rather than making factually incorrect statements against the state government. In a press statement, Awasthi accused Thakur of attempting to stay in the media spotlight by making baseless allegations while ignoring the state’s critical financial concerns.

Highlighting the pending financial aid, Awasthi stated that the Central Government has yet to release Rs. 10,000 crore in disaster relief funds for the massive calamity that struck Himachal Pradesh in 2023. Additionally, nearly Rs. 9,000 crore of employees’ National Pension Scheme (NPS) funds remain stuck with the Centre. He emphasized that instead of misleading BJP leaders and obstructing financial support, Jai Ram Thakur should demand the immediate release of these crucial funds from the BJP-led Union Government.

Awasthi further criticized the financial mismanagement of the previous BJP government, holding it responsible for pushing the state into a debt crisis. He revealed that the previous administration left behind a staggering debt of Rs. 75,000 crore, alongside Rs. 10,000 crore in outstanding employee dues. Due to this reckless expenditure, the current state government has been forced to take loans to meet repayment obligations. He pointed out that 63% of the loans acquired in the past two years were used to service debts inherited from the previous BJP regime.

Slamming the BJP’s governance, Awasthi stated that despite boasting of a ‘double engine’ model, the BJP government failed to generate revenue, improve infrastructure, or provide basic facilities to the people. Instead of driving progress, the double-engine government only worsened the state’s financial distress. The previous administration remained inactive in tackling economic challenges and spent lavishly on non-essential expenditures.

In contrast, Awasthi praised the current Congress-led government under Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu for prioritizing revenue augmentation and implementing public welfare schemes aimed at the state’s development. He claimed that the positive impact of these initiatives was now clearly visible across Himachal Pradesh.

He concluded by stating that BJP leaders were frustrated by the rising popularity of the Congress government and were resorting to false allegations to tarnish its image. Awasthi urged them to support the welfare policies of the state government rather than obstructing development initiatives meant for the betterment of Himachal Pradesh.
