Hog Deer Becomes Mascot of Kathlour-Kaushalya Wildlife Sanctuary in Punjab
The Punjab State Wildlife Board has chosen the Hog Deer as the official mascot of the Kathlour-Kaushalya Wildlife Sanctuary. This decision, announced by Forest and Wildlife Preservation Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak, aims to raise awareness and support for the conservation of this endangered species.
The Hog Deer, classified as “Endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), thrives within the sanctuary’s habitat. Minister Kataruchak emphasized the importance of protecting this valuable species, highlighting its inclusion in Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Amendment Act, 2022.
This move aligns with the board’s broader efforts to conserve wildlife across the state. Additionally, the meeting addressed other crucial issues, including:
- Approving the proposal for an Aqua duct construction in Bir Bhunerheri Wildlife Sanctuary to prevent monsoon floods in nearby villages.
- Sanctioning a simplified policy for limited hunting of Wild Boars and Nilgai to minimize crop damage.
This development signifies Punjab’s commitment to preserving its diverse wildlife and promoting responsible management within protected areas.
