India Clinches Second Consecutive U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup Title with Dominant Win Over South Africa

Kuala Lumpur, February 2, 2025 – India’s young women cricketers proved their dominance on the world stage once again, securing their second consecutive ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup title with an emphatic nine-wicket victory over South Africa. The victory, achieved with 52 balls to spare, further solidified India’s position as a powerhouse in youth cricket, showcasing their impeccable structure and talent pipeline.

India’s performance throughout the tournament was nothing short of extraordinary, with the team breezing through the group stages and the knockout rounds without dropping a single match. In the final, they overwhelmed South Africa, bowling them out for a mere 82 runs before chasing down the target comfortably. Gongadi Trisha was the star of the show, contributing both with the ball and bat. She delivered a stellar performance, taking 3 wickets for 15 runs and then anchoring India’s chase with a composed 44 not out off 33 balls, including eight beautifully-timed boundaries.

South Africa, led by Kayla Reyneke, chose to bowl first, but their decision backfired as India’s spinners took control. Aayushi Shukla was the standout performer with the ball, claiming two wickets for just nine runs off four overs, including a crucial breakthrough to dismiss Diara Ramlakan. Trisha added to the woes of the South African batting lineup with a triple strike, showcasing her all-round prowess.

The Indian spin attack dismantled South Africa’s lineup, with Parunika Sisodia (2/6) and Shabnam Shakil (1/7) contributing to the early breakthroughs. India’s bowlers left South Africa struggling at 33/3 at the halfway stage, and despite some resistance from Mieke van Voorst (23), the Proteas were bowled out for a meager total.

Trisha’s performance wasn’t just confined to the ball. She led India’s chase with a composed knock, supported by vice-captain Sanika Chalke, who finished the match with an unbeaten 26 off 22 balls, clinching the victory with a boundary. The partnership was instrumental in ensuring that India completed the chase with ease, finishing on 84/1 in just 11.2 overs.

Speaking after the match, Sanika Chalke expressed her joy, saying, “I’ve dreamt of this moment for the past two years, and I can’t believe I hit the winning runs. It’s truly surreal. My teammates’ support made all the difference, and this moment is one I’ll cherish forever.”

India’s victory not only highlights the strength of their youth development system but also reinforces their growing reputation in international women’s cricket. With a perfect record and a blend of exceptional talent and leadership, the Indian team has set a new benchmark in the world of women’s cricket.

The victory also marks an important milestone for India’s cricketing future, as these young players continue to pave the way for the next generation of stars. The tournament, held in Kuala Lumpur, proved to be a defining moment for Indian cricket, as they demonstrated their depth and skill across all departments, leaving no doubt about their status as the world’s best U-19 team.
