Union Power Minister Manohar Lal emphasized the need for innovation in the power sector, urging industry stakeholders to develop cutting-edge solutions that will propel India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation. Addressing the Elecrama 2025 event, organized by the Indian Electrical & Electronics Manufacturers’ Association (IEEMA) in Greater Noida, the minister highlighted the country’s ambitious renewable energy targets and the crucial role of the power sector in driving economic growth.
With India aiming to achieve 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, Manohar Lal underscored the vast opportunities available for industry players to contribute to this transformation. The government, he said, is committed to enhancing the power sector’s capabilities by promoting innovative technologies such as advanced power electronics, efficient transformers, smart grid solutions, and power converters. These advancements will help maximize the benefits of renewable energy and ensure a more sustainable and resilient power supply.
As the summer months approach, the demand for electricity is expected to surge, putting additional pressure on the power grid. The minister reassured that the government is taking proactive measures to ensure an uninterrupted and efficient power supply across the country. By modernizing the power infrastructure and improving transmission and distribution systems, India aims to mitigate power shortages and ensure reliability for industries, businesses, and households.
One of the key focus areas is the expansion of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, which is essential for reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable mobility. Manohar Lal highlighted the urgent need to develop battery-swapping stations, fast chargers, and vehicle-to-grid systems to support the growing demand for electric transportation. With e-mobility presenting a massive opportunity for economic growth and environmental sustainability, the minister called on industry leaders to invest in research and development to drive innovation in this space.
The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting investors and industry stakeholders, encouraging them to take advantage of various government schemes and initiatives aimed at strengthening the power sector. He expressed confidence that the 500 GW renewable energy target could be achieved seamlessly if both the industry and the government work in tandem.
Since 2014, India has made remarkable strides in expanding its renewable energy capacity. The country’s total renewable energy capacity has grown 2.81 times, reaching 200 GW. Solar energy, in particular, has witnessed exponential growth, increasing 38 times to cross the 100 GW milestone. This progress, the minister noted, demonstrates India’s determination to transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.
As the nation continues to modernize its power infrastructure, the emphasis on advanced technologies and innovation will play a crucial role in ensuring energy security and economic growth. The collaboration between the government and industry will be instrumental in shaping India’s energy future, positioning the country as a global leader in renewable energy and sustainable development.
