Indian Government Strongly Objects Google’s Delisting of Indian Apps, Calls for Urgent Meeting with Tech Giant

In a bold stance against Google’s removal of Indian apps from its Play Store, the Indian government emphasizes the imperative of safeguarding the country’s startup ecosystem. IT and Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw asserts that the fate of Indian startups cannot be left at the mercy of tech giants, highlighting the crucial role these startups play in bolstering the Indian economy.

Vaishnaw’s firm stance underscores the government’s commitment to protecting Indian startups, especially in light of Google’s recent move to delist several apps, including popular matrimony apps, over service fee disputes. With the startup ecosystem flourishing, comprising over one lakh startups and more than 100 unicorns, the government stresses the need to channelize the energy of youth and entrepreneurs effectively, rather than subjecting them to the policies of big tech corporations.

The minister announces an upcoming meeting with Google and affected app developers to address the dispute promptly. This proactive approach signifies India’s unwavering support for its startups, as Vaishnaw reiterates that such delisting actions cannot be permitted.

Google’s decision to delist apps stemmed from allegations of non-payment of service fees by ten companies, including well-established ones. While Google did not disclose the names, searches on the Play Store revealed the absence of prominent apps like Shaadi, Matrimony.com, and Bharat Matrimony, along with others like Altt (formerly ALTBalaji), Kuku FM, Quack Quack, and Truly Madly.

In the face of this development, the Indian government’s proactive measures and firm stance serve as a testament to its dedication to fostering a conducive environment for the growth and sustainability of Indian startups, ensuring they thrive and contribute significantly to the nation’s economic prosperity.
