Prime Minister Narendra Modi has landed in the historic city of Athens, Greece, in response to an invitation extended by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. This momentous visit marks the first time an Indian Prime Minister has set foot on Greek soil in four decades. Prime Minister Modi’s trip follows his recent participation in the 15th BRICS Summit held in Johannesburg, South Africa.
In a departure statement issued on Tuesday, Prime Minister Modi stated, “Following my visit to South Africa, I will be journeying to Athens, Greece on 25 August 2023, upon the gracious invitation of H.E. Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister of Greece. This visit holds special significance as it will be my inaugural visit to this ancient land.” He emphasized the extensive historical connections spanning over two millennia between the two civilizations. In the contemporary era, the bilateral relationship has been fortified by shared principles of democracy, the rule of law, and pluralism. Collaborative efforts across various sectors such as trade, investment, defense, culture, and people-to-people exchanges have further solidified the ties between the two nations.
Prime Minister Modi expressed his optimism that his visit to Greece will mark the beginning of a new phase in the multifaceted relationship between India and Greece. India’s Ambassador to Greece, Rudrendra Tandon, echoed this sentiment, foreseeing that the visit would infuse fresh vitality into the already robust bilateral ties. As Prime Minister Modi embarked on the initial leg of his journey, he conveyed his enthusiasm to augment the camaraderie and cooperation between the two countries.
