India has taken a significant step in defense technology with the recent successful flight test of the Pinaka Guided Weapon System. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Pinaka is a multi-barrel rocket launcher system capable of hitting multiple targets with high precision and rapid fire capabilities. The Defense Ministry highlighted that the trials confirmed the weapon’s range, accuracy, and consistency, marking its readiness for further deployment and export.
Pinaka, named after the bow of Lord Shiva, was originally designed to replace the Russian BM-21 Grad system and has since been upgraded. The latest version boasts an extended range of up to 120 kilometers, with further models under development aimed at reaching 200 kilometers. This enhanced range and accuracy make it competitive with advanced systems like the American HIMARS.
Notably, Pinaka’s export potential is rising. Following the recent order from Armenia, France has also shown interest in testing and potentially acquiring the system, reflecting the strengthening of Indo-French defense ties. This interest complements other major defense deals between the two nations, such as the acquisition of Rafale jets and C-295 aircraft.
The successful trial of Pinaka marks a win for India’s “Make in India” initiative, aiming to boost domestic manufacturing and establish India as a key player in global defense exports.
