Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s Hunger Strike Reaches 57th Day: Farmers’ Determination Strengthens

The ongoing hunger strike by Jagjit Singh Dallewal, the president of the non-political body of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), has entered its 57th day at the Khanauri border. Despite the grueling conditions, Dallewal remains steadfast in his commitment to the farmers’ cause, symbolizing the resilience of the movement. Due to health concerns, he is being shifted to a specially prepared room today to ensure better living conditions while he continues his protest.

For nearly two months, Dallewal has been staying in a trolley, which lacks proper ventilation and exposure to natural light. Doctors advised relocating him as the confined space posed health risks. In response, a bacteria-free room has been prepared, complete with provisions for sunlight and natural air circulation, ensuring a safer environment for him. This move underscores the growing recognition of the critical nature of his protest and the need to support his health during the extended hunger strike.

The farmer leaders have reiterated that Dallewal’s hunger strike and the broader struggle will continue until their demands are fully addressed. The protest has galvanized support from various regions, reflecting the unity and strength of the farmers’ movement. Leaders have declared this as a significant step towards achieving victory in their fight for justice.

The impact of Dallewal’s hunger strike is being felt across the country. In Maharashtra, farmers organized district-level symbolic hunger strikes in solidarity. They also submitted memorandums to district authorities, urging the central government to address the farmers’ demands. Similarly, in Tamil Nadu, thousands of farmers in Chennai are preparing for a one-day symbolic fast to show their support for Dallewal’s protest.

Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s hunger strike represents the broader concerns of Indian farmers, who have been raising issues such as fair prices for crops, legal guarantees for Minimum Support Prices (MSP), and other long-standing grievances. This extended hunger strike has become a focal point, drawing national attention to the farmers’ plight.

The symbolic gestures of solidarity from farmers in different states highlight the deep-seated frustrations within the agricultural community and their shared resolve to fight for systemic change. While the central government has yet to respond meaningfully, the nationwide mobilization signifies the momentum of the movement and its potential to bring about significant reforms.

As the hunger strike progresses, it reflects not only the personal resolve of Jagjit Singh Dallewal but also the collective spirit of Indian farmers. The growing support from different corners of the country shows that this movement is not confined to one region but resonates with the entire farming community. The onus now lies on the government to address these demands meaningfully and ensure justice for those who form the backbone of India’s economy.
