Actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut has once again expressed regret over her comments about the controversial farm laws, stating that her opinions were personal and did not reflect the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) official stance. In a video statement, the BJP MP from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, said many people were “disappointed” by her previous remarks calling for the reintroduction of the farm laws that had sparked widespread protests in 2020. This comes as the BJP distanced itself from her comments, particularly in light of the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections, where farming communities play a significant role.
Kangana, who has been known for her outspoken nature, addressed the backlash in her video statement. “I have to keep in mind that I am not just an artist but also a BJP worker. My opinions should not be personal and should represent the party’s stand. I regret and take my words back if my comments have disappointed anyone,” she said. The statement marks a significant shift in her earlier stance when she supported the farm laws that were repealed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government in November 2021 after prolonged protests by farmers across the country.
On Tuesday, while speaking to reporters in Mandi, Kangana had stirred controversy by suggesting that the three farm laws, which were repealed following massive protests, should be brought back. She remarked that farmers themselves should demand their return as the laws, in her view, were beneficial to the agricultural sector. “I know this will be controversial, but I feel the farm laws that were repealed should be brought back. The farmers themselves should demand it. They are a pillar of strength for the nation’s development, and I want to appeal to them to demand the laws back for their own good,” she had said.
The farm laws, which were introduced in September 2020, aimed to reform the agricultural sector by removing barriers for farmers to sell their produce beyond state-regulated markets. However, the laws were met with fierce opposition from farmer unions, who argued that they would lead to the dismantling of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) system and leave farmers at the mercy of large corporations. After months of protests and sit-ins by farmers, particularly in Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, the government finally rolled back the laws in a significant political retreat in November 2021.
Following Kangana’s comments in support of the laws, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia quickly clarified that her views did not reflect the party’s position. “Kangana Ranaut is not authorized to make such a statement on behalf of the BJP, and it does not represent the party’s view on the farm bills,” Bhatia said, distancing the party from the actor-politician’s controversial remarks.
Responding to the BJP’s distancing from her comments, Kangana released a statement clarifying that her views on the farm laws were personal and did not represent the party’s stand. “My views on farm laws are personal, and they don’t represent the party’s stance on these Bills,” she said, signaling her awareness of the controversy her remarks had caused.
The BJP’s swift distancing from Kangana’s comments comes at a sensitive time, with the Haryana Assembly elections on the horizon. Haryana has a large agrarian population, and farmers make up a significant portion of the electorate in many constituencies. Given the widespread opposition to the farm laws in key farming states like Haryana and Punjab, Kangana’s comments could have sparked renewed tensions and hampered the BJP’s prospects in the upcoming polls.
Political analysts have pointed out that any endorsement of the repealed farm laws could potentially alienate farming communities in Haryana, where the BJP is already facing significant challenges. Farmers in the state played a pivotal role in the 2020-2021 protests, and many areas with large farming populations continue to hold strong reservations about the farm laws. With the BJP eyeing another term in power in Haryana, the party must tread carefully when addressing issues related to agriculture and farming policy.
Kangana’s comments have highlighted the tightrope the BJP is walking as it balances between its agrarian voter base and the need for reform in the agricultural sector. The farm laws, although seen as necessary by some sections of the government, remain a highly sensitive topic in states like Haryana, where farmers form a crucial voting bloc.
As the Haryana elections approach, the BJP will need to ensure that any public statements by its leaders and representatives are carefully aligned with the party’s official stance. Given the widespread impact of the farm protests and the emotional weight the issue carries in Haryana, the party will likely continue to distance itself from any comments that could reignite old tensions.
Kangana’s apology and the BJP’s quick response reflect the party’s focus on maintaining a strong rapport with Haryana’s farming communities in the lead-up to the elections. The situation underscores the delicate balance the BJP must maintain between its broader national reform agenda and the local concerns of its voter base, particularly in agrarian states.
