Kangra District’s Disaster Management Efforts Recognized with State Award

Dharamshala, November 21: The Himachal Pradesh Disaster Management Authority has awarded Kangra District for its exemplary efforts in implementing a volunteer training program for disaster management, making it the top district in the state. Over 9,500 volunteers in Kangra have been trained to manage disasters effectively.

Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Berwa highlighted that the district administration is fully vigilant regarding disaster management. The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) team has been working tirelessly, which has led to this recognition at the state level. He further explained that the district’s proactive approach includes setting up committees at the village level to reduce the risks associated with disasters.

Berwa also emphasized that regular training programs are being conducted for Panchayati Raj institutions, community-based organizations, and rural communities to ensure effective response during disaster relief and rehabilitation. As per the Disaster Management Act of 2005 and the State Disaster Management Policy of 2011, forming village-level disaster management committees is mandatory. In this regard, each gram panchayat is preparing ‘Disaster Mitras’ (Disaster Friends) to act as first responders in case of emergencies.

He also pointed out that scientists have warned of the possibility of major earthquakes in the Himalayan region of Himachal Pradesh, which could cause significant damage. Kangra, being a highly sensitive zone in terms of seismic activity, has taken steps to mitigate the risks. To prepare for earthquakes, masons are being trained in earthquake-resistant construction techniques. Additionally, regular disaster drills are being conducted in government offices and schools to ensure active participation from the public in disaster preparedness.
