Kangra Police Registers Over 8,800 Migrant Labourers; Emphasizes Verification and Public Cooperation

 The Kangra District Police reported that 8,815 migrant labourers have been registered in the district’s police stations between January 2024 and December 2024. Of these, 8,662 individuals are from various Indian states, while 153 have migrated from neighboring Nepal.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Kangra, Ms. Shalini Agnihotri, informed that correspondence has been initiated with the respective police stations and states for character verification of the registered migrants. “Character verification for some individuals has been completed, while verification for newly registered migrants is still underway,” she stated.

The police have also undertaken public awareness campaigns through their officers and media to ensure proper compliance. “Residents, villagers, and Panchayat representatives have been regularly informed to instruct migrant labourers, hawkers, or vendors found operating in Kangra district without police registration to get verified at their nearest police station,” SP Agnihotri said.

Further emphasizing accountability, the SP noted that landlords who rent out properties to individuals arriving in Kangra for employment must ensure their tenants are registered with the police. “Failure to comply will result in legal action against the landlord if their tenants are found unregistered,” she warned.
