The much-anticipated Kila Raipur Rural Olympics 2025 officially commenced on Friday with a grand opening ceremony at the local stadium, led by Punjab’s Tourism and Cultural Affairs Minister, Tarunpreet Singh Sond. The event marks a significant milestone in Punjab’s sporting calendar, with a focus on restoring the state’s rich sporting legacy and promoting a vibrant sports culture.
Minister Sond, speaking at the inauguration, highlighted the Punjab government’s commitment to elevating sports in the state under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. He emphasized that the government’s efforts are aimed at fostering a sports-friendly environment, bringing Punjab back to its previous glory in the sports world.
Announcing a generous budget of Rs. 75 lakh for organizing the Kila Raipur Rural Olympics, Minister Sond expressed optimism that this financial backing would help not only enhance the event but also support athletes and sports in the state. He also highlighted the increased cash awards for medal-winning athletes participating in the Olympics and other international competitions, boosting morale for aspiring sportspeople.
The Minister also shared exciting news with the audience, revealing that the popular bullock cart races, which have been a major attraction at the rural Olympics, will be resumed soon. This move has been met with enthusiasm, as these races have long been a beloved tradition at the event. Minister Sond expressed his hope that the Chief Minister would lend support to issuing a notification for the resumption of this traditional sport.
The Kila Raipur Rural Olympics provide an inclusive platform for participants of all ages, from children to senior citizens, to showcase their talents across a range of sports. This year’s opening day featured intense competition in various sports, including men’s and women’s hockey, Kabaddi for girls under 14 and under 17, 60m and 100m races for boys and girls, 1500m races, 400m race heats and finals, Kho-Kho matches, volleyball for men, shooting events, and several traditional rural games.
Minister Sond applauded the efforts of the district administration, led by Deputy Commissioner Jitendra Jorwal, for ensuring the successful organization of the event. The festivities will continue with musical performances by popular Punjabi singer Preet Harpal on the evening of January 31, followed by performances from Virasat Sandhu on February 1 and Kulwinder Billa on February 2.
