Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Phase 4 Kicks Off with 96 Seats in 10 States and Union Territories

The fourth phase of the highly anticipated Lok Sabha Elections 2024 commenced on May 13, with 96 seats across 10 states and union territories going to the polls. This crucial phase marks a significant milestone in the world’s largest democratic exercise, as voters in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Jammu and Kashmir cast their ballots to elect their representatives to the lower house of parliament.

The previous three phases of the elections, held on April 19, April 26, and May 7, witnessed voter turnouts of 66.1%, 66.7%, and 65.68%, respectively, slightly lower than the 2019 general elections. However, the Election Commission remains optimistic that the fourth phase will see a surge in voter participation, with the polling time extended in certain assembly segments of 17 parliamentary constituencies in Telangana to boost engagement.

The fourth phase features several high-profile contests, including former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in Kannauj, Union Ministers Giriraj Singh (Begusarai, Bihar), Nityanand Rai (Ujiarpur, Bihar), and Raosaheb Danve (Jalna, Maharashtra). Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and former cricketer Yusuf Pathan of the Trinamool Congress are vying for victory in Baharampur, West Bengal, alongside BJP’s Pankaja Munde in Beed, Maharashtra. Additionally, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi in Hyderabad, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh Congress president YS Sharmila in Kadapa are also in the spotlight.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), currently hold a significant number of seats in the 96 constituencies up for grabs in this phase. The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), led by the Indian National Congress, is mounting a strong challenge to the ruling coalition, hoping to make inroads in these key battlegrounds.

As the election process progresses, the nation eagerly awaits the final results, scheduled to be announced on June 4, three days after the conclusion of the seventh and final phase on June 1. The Lok Sabha Elections 2024 will undoubtedly shape the future of India’s political landscape, with voters across the country exercising their democratic rights to choose their representatives and shape the nation’s course for the next five years.
