Maoists Target Security Forces in Deadly IED Attack in Chhattisgarh, 9 Killed in Biggest Strike of 2025

In the deadliest attack on security forces in Chhattisgarh in the past two years, Maoists detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) in the Kutru area of Bijapur district, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals, including eight members of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the civilian driver. The attack occurred around 2:15 pm when the DRG personnel were returning in their vehicle, a Scorpio, following a three-day-long counter-insurgency operation aimed at eradicating Maoist activity from the border regions of Narayanpur, Dantewada, and Bijapur.

According to Sundarraj P, Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range), the DRG personnel, who were recruited largely from the local tribal population and surrendered Naxalites, were killed on the spot when the IED exploded. The attack occurred after they had completed their anti-Maoist operation, in which five Maoists were killed, and one DRG head constable lost his life. The DRG team was returning to its base when the blast occurred.

Following the deadly attack, reinforcement units were quickly deployed to the area to evacuate the bodies of the victims. A search operation has also been launched to track down the attackers. Visuals from the site of the explosion revealed a massive crater in the concrete road, over 10 feet deep, and the complete destruction of the vehicle. Dismembered bodies were seen placed on plastic sheets, and a part of the vehicle was found hanging on a nearby tree.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed his grief over the attack and the loss of DRG personnel and the civilian driver. He stated that the Maoists, frustrated by the ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the Bastar region, resorted to such cowardly acts. The Chief Minister also reassured the public that the sacrifices made by the martyrs would not be in vain, and the fight against the Maoist insurgency in the state would continue unabated.

The attack serves as a grim reminder of the continuing threat posed by Maoist insurgents in the region, particularly in the Bastar area, where security forces remain engaged in efforts to eliminate Naxalite influence. The state government has pledged to intensify its counter-insurgency measures to ensure the safety and security of its personnel and citizens.
