“PM Modi Emphasizes Consensus and Substance Over Slogans as 18th Lok Sabha Begins Amid Opposition’s Constitutional Protest”
At the commencement of the 18th Lok Sabha session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the need for a cooperative government, stating that while a majority is essential for governance, consensus is crucial for running the country. He underscored that India needs a substantive, responsible opposition rather than mere slogans. Modi reflected on the government’s efforts to serve “Maa Bharati” (Mother India) by achieving consensus and involving all to meet the aspirations of 1.4 billion citizens. In a pointed reference to the Congress, he recalled the Emergency imposed on June 25, 1975, branding it a “black spot” on democracy where the Constitution was “discarded.”
The session’s start was marked by discord, with the Constitution becoming the central theme of the day. Members of the opposition INDIA bloc, led by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav, showcased copies of the Constitution as PM Modi took his oath. This gesture aimed to signify their commitment to safeguarding democratic principles. The opposition’s protest continued with slogans such as “Long live Constitution,” “We will save Constitution,” and “Save our democracy,” emphasizing their stance against perceived attacks on the Constitution by PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
The INDIA bloc MPs gathered near Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in Parliament, displaying their copies of the Constitution and reiterating their resolve to defend democratic values. Rahul Gandhi stated that the opposition would not allow the Constitution to be undermined. When Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan took his oath, the opposition raised slogans referencing alleged irregularities in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG).
The session’s contentious start underscores the critical role of opposition in a democracy. By insisting on adherence to constitutional principles, the INDIA bloc highlights the importance of checks and balances in governance. This approach could lead to more robust legislative scrutiny and better governance outcomes, ultimately benefiting the state by ensuring that policies are well-debated and inclusive.
The emphasis on consensus by PM Modi, coupled with the opposition’s commitment to constitutional values, sets the stage for a potentially more collaborative parliamentary session. If both sides can find common ground, it could lead to more effective governance and stronger democratic institutions, benefiting the entire nation. The proactive stance of the opposition also ensures that key issues remain in focus, promoting transparency and accountability in government actions.
