PM Modi Slams INDIA Bloc, Appeals for Votes in Patiala Rally Amid Farmers’ Protests
Patiala – Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing his first Lok Sabha election rally in Punjab at the Polo Ground in Patiala on Thursday, launched a scathing attack on the INDIA bloc, accusing them of lacking leadership and intent. He dubbed the coalition as ‘bhrashtachariyon ka INDI gathbandhan’ (a coalition of the corrupt). Modi’s rally took place amid ongoing farmer protests in the district, adding to the political tension.
In his address, Modi accused the INDIA bloc of trying to divide the country and society, contrasting their approach with his vision of making India a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India). He criticized Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, labeling him a ‘kagzi CM’ (paper CM) who spends more time in Delhi than addressing the issues of Punjab. This jab was a direct reference to Mann’s perceived frequent presence in the national capital rather than focusing on state governance.
The Prime Minister was welcomed by prominent BJP leaders and candidates, including Patiala candidate Preneet Kaur, Faridkot candidate Hans Raj Hans, Sangrur candidate Arvind Khanna, Bathinda candidate Parampal Kaur, and BJP state chief Sunil Jakhar. Modi’s presence was seen as a significant boost to the BJP’s campaign efforts in the state.
Earlier in the day, farmer unions supporting the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) marched towards the Polo Ground from Shambhu and Khanauri borders, where they have been camping since February 13. These protests mark 100 days since their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march was halted by security forces. Despite the agitations, the rally proceeded with a packed audience of BJP supporters.
Modi made a fervent appeal for votes for BJP candidates in Patiala, Sangrur, Bathinda, Faridkot, and Fatehgarh Sahib. He reminded the audience of the Congress party’s historical failures, citing the partition and subsequent long-standing issues like the inaccessibility of Kartarpur Sahib. Modi claimed that had he been in power during the 1971 Bangladesh war, he would have ensured Kartarpur Sahib was included in India.
Modi highlighted several initiatives taken by his government to benefit Punjab and the Sikh community, such as exempting langar (community kitchen) from taxes and easing foreign donations to Shri Harmandir Sahib. He also mentioned the declaration of ‘Veer Bal Diwas’ to honor the bravery and sacrifice of Guru Gobind Singh’s sons and the safe return of Sikh families and Guru Granth Sahib scriptures from Afghanistan.
Modi accused the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of playing a dual game, pretending to be adversaries while being united in their corruption. He called out AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, stating that those who betrayed their mentor Anna Hazare and frequently lie cannot be trusted to develop Punjab.
The Prime Minister emphasized the achievements of his government in lifting 25 crore people out of poverty over the past decade. He warned against the INDIA bloc’s alleged plans to seize half of the public’s earnings, claiming their agenda is to divide the nation, whereas his aim is to build a developed India. Modi urged the people of Punjab to not waste their votes and support the BJP, which is committed to the state’s development.
Modi outlined his vision for a prosperous Punjab, emphasizing the state’s contributions to agriculture and industry. He lamented that corrupt politicians have tarnished Punjab’s potential, allowing mafia rule and neglecting state governance. He reassured the audience that the BJP is focused on creating a developed Punjab and India.
Modi sought the blessings and support of the people of Punjab, urging them to vote for the BJP and its allies to ensure a better future. He reiterated that the INDIA bloc lacks both a leader and the intent to develop the country, positioning the BJP as the only party capable of delivering progress and stability.
The rally saw the presence of several prominent figures, including Sports Minister Yadavinder Goma, CM’s Media Advisor Naresh Chauhan, and former candidate Vijay Inder Karan, among others. This rally marks a significant moment in the BJP’s campaign, as it navigates the complex political landscape of Punjab, addressing both local grievances and national issues, with a strong emphasis on combating corruption and promoting development.
