Political Turmoil: Kejriwal’s Insulin Episode Raises Questions on Jail Medical Oversight
According to sources within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is currently incarcerated in Tihar Jail, was administered insulin after his blood sugar levels spiked to 320, indicating a concerning level of hyperglycemia. This development follows a recent controversy wherein Kejriwal, a type-2 diabetes patient, had claimed “denial of insulin” amid disputes over his health statements with the jail administration.
Sources reveal that this marked the first insulin dosage provided to the Chief Minister since his incarceration on March 21 in connection with a money laundering case related to Delhi’s alcohol policy. As of now, Kejriwal remains in judicial custody at Tihar Jail until April 23, pending the next hearing.
Confirming the medical intervention, a Tihar Jail source disclosed that following recommendations from an AIIMS doctor, Kejriwal received a two-unit insulin shot on Monday evening. Notably, while not in jail, the Chief Minister typically required a daily insulin intake of 50 units.
Previously, Kejriwal had written a letter to the Tihar Jail superintendent on Monday, requesting insulin administration, citing a “dangerous” blood glucose reading between 250 and 320 on his glucose meter. He vehemently accused the jail administration of “misleading” about his health due to “political pressure.”
Moreover, before this medical development, a Delhi court noted discrepancies in the food provided to Kejriwal at his residence within the jail premises. The court observed that certain items served did not align with the dietary recommendations prescribed by his doctors. While his physicians had advised against foods like potatoes, taro root, and mangoes, these were found in his meals.
In response to these observations, Special CBI and ED Judge Kaveri Baweja questioned why items not in accordance with Kejriwal’s medical regimen were permitted to be served. This scrutiny emerged shortly after allegations surfaced, suggesting that Kejriwal was consuming sweets and other high-sugar foods to artificially elevate his blood sugar levels for medical bail.
As per the court’s directive on Monday, Kejriwal will continue to receive home-cooked meals, provided he strictly adheres to a dietary plan formulated by a panel of senior endocrinologists and diabetes specialists from AIIMS.
