Powergrid to Renovate Cremation Grounds and Graveyards in 658 Haryana Villages with CSR Support

Powergrid, a leading Navratna company of India, has committed to renovating cremation grounds and graveyards in 658 villages across four districts of Haryana—Karnal, Panipat, Rewari, and Kurukshetra—under the Shivdham Yojana. This initiative, worth approximately Rs 50 crore, will be funded through Powergrid’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) scheme. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Powergrid and the Haryana Development and Panchayat Department in the presence of Haryana Chief Minister Mr. Naib Singh Saini in Gurugram today.

During the signing ceremony, Chief Minister Saini praised the invaluable contribution of corporate companies like Powergrid in rural development, emphasizing their role in advancing social welfare. Minister for Commerce, Industry, Forest and Environment, Rao Narbir Singh, and Minister for Cooperation and Tourism, Dr. Arvind Sharma, were also present at the event.

The MoU was signed by Dr. J K Abir, Director General of the Development and Panchayat Department, and Sanjay Kumar Verma, General Manager at Powergrid. Chairman of Powergrid, R.K. Tyagi, detailed the project, highlighting the allocation of Rs. 49.94 crore for the renovation of these facilities. The project includes constructing boundary walls, paved roads, sheds, and providing drinking water facilities at all 658 Shivdhams and graveyards.

Dr. J.K. Abir shared the breakdown of the expenditure, specifying that Rs 10.97 crore would be spent on 198 villages in Karnal district, Rs 18.46 crore on 237 villages in Kurukshetra district, Rs 5.15 crore on 106 villages in Panipat, and Rs 15.35 crore on 117 villages in Rewari district.

The CSR initiative is part of a broader effort in Haryana to promote social welfare. Since the formation of the Haryana State CSR Trust in March 2021, over Rs 750 crore has been invested in development works under the Social Participation Program, and in the current financial year, Rs 350 crore will be utilized for further rural development projects.

The event was also attended by Powergrid Chairman and Managing Director R.K. Tyagi and Commissioner R.C. Bidhan.
