President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu conferred Padma Shri to Dr. Rattan Singh Jaggi

The President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu conferred Padma Shri to Dr. Rattan Singh Jaggi in field of Literature & Education from Punjab in the Civil Investiture Ceremony here today.

Dr. Rattan Singh Jaggi is an eminent scholar of Punjabi and Hindi Literature with Gurmat& Bhakti movement literature being his forte.

His literary works include books, commentaries and encyclopedias. Despite being 95 years of age, he is still continuing his literary stint untiringly and indefatigably.

Dr. Jaggiobtained Ph.D in 1962 for “Critical study of Pauranik compositions in DasamGranth” and was awarded D.Litt. in 1973 onthe subject “Guru Nanak: His personality, works & teachings”. In 2000, he came out with meticulous commentary of DasamGranth in five volumes. He is considered an authority on the DasamGranth and his works got accolades in immense measure from the prominent literary personalities. Continuing his literary contribution to the society, he authored many books on Shri Guru Nanak Dev ji and during the 550thPrakash Purb celebrations Punjab Government published “Guru Nanak Bani: PaathateyVyakhya” prepared by him in Punjabi and Hindi. He also published a treatise on Guru Nanak bani namely “Guru Nanak: JeevniateyVyaktitatva” and second book “Guru Nanak di Vichardhara”, both of which were awarded by the Languages Department, Punjab. One of his most significant is the transliteration and translation of glorious holy book “TulsiRamayan”(Ram CharitManas) in Punjabi. The book is recipient of the National Award by the Sahitya Akademiin 1989. He readied Reference Dictionary of Punjabi Literature in 1994. He also prepared five volume History of Punjabi Literature.

Dr. Jaggi compiled “Guru GranthVishavkosh” (Encyclopedia) in 2002 and Encyclopedia of Sikhism in 2005 and also a five-volume sub-commentary of Sri Guru Granth Sahib titled “Arthbodh Sri Guru Granth Sahib” in 2007. It was in 2013 that he rendered his biggest service to the cause of Sikhism preparing comprehensive commentary of Sri Guru Granth Sahib namely”BhavPrabodhiniTeeka-Sri Guru Granth Sahib”. It contains detailed explication of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and is proving to be immensely invaluable for humanity. The year 2017 saw him publishing five volumes of this commentary in Hindi also.
