Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Prepares for Upcoming Civic Elections
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is capitalizing on the recent victory of AAP candidate Mohinder Bhagat in the Jalandhar West by-election, where Bhagat won by a significant margin of 37,325 votes against BJP’s Sheetal Angural. This win is seen as a crucial boost for Mann and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) following a disappointing performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections, where AAP secured only three out of 13 seats in Punjab.
In light of this victory, Mann has convened a meeting with senior officials from the Local Government and Rural Development departments, as well as the Chief Secretary and State Election Commissioner. This meeting has sparked speculation about the imminent announcement of elections for urban and rural civic bodies, including Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis, and Zila Parishads. Elections for 13,241 Panchayats are due, and the terms of several rural civic bodies will conclude in November.
Mann has indicated his intention to implement development programs before seeking the public’s mandate for these upcoming civic polls and the assembly by-elections in four constituencies: Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal, Barnala, and Gidderbaha. He suggested that the civic elections could occur after the assembly by-elections, which are expected to align with the Haryana Assembly polls.
