Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has launched a scathing attack on the Narendra Modi-led central government, accusing it of repeatedly using Amritsar as a landing site for deportation flights carrying Indian nationals expelled from the United States. Mann warned the Centre against turning the holy city into a “detention center” for deported individuals, alleging that the BJP government is deliberately maligning Punjab and its people on the global stage.
The Chief Minister personally visited Sri Guru Ramdas International Airport late at night to inspect the arrangements for the arrival of deportees. Expressing his deep concern, Mann stated that history bears witness to the fact that those who have attempted to undermine Punjab have never succeeded. He accused the Modi government of resorting to unethical tactics by repeatedly landing deportation flights in Amritsar, thereby creating a negative narrative around Punjab. He further stated that this act has deeply hurt the sentiments of Punjabis, particularly the Sikh community.
Mann reminded the BJP leadership that Amritsar is home to revered sites such as Sri Harmandir Sahib, the Valmiki pilgrimage site, and the historic Durgiana Temple. He also referenced Jallianwala Bagh, where hundreds of freedom fighters sacrificed their lives for the country’s independence. According to him, using Punjab to defame its people is an unforgivable offense, one that Punjabis will never forget or forgive. He questioned whether any government would dare to carry out such actions in Vatican City, the holy site for Christians, and asked why the same respect is not extended to Punjab.
Lashing out at the Modi government for failing to protect the rights of its citizens abroad, Mann accused the Centre of endangering India’s unity, integrity, and sovereignty. He criticized the government’s weak foreign policy, which, he claimed, had resulted in the inhumane treatment of deported Indian nationals. He expressed outrage that, while Prime Minister Modi was embracing US leaders during his recent visit, Indian citizens were being deported in shackles and humiliation. He questioned why Modi did not raise this issue with former US President Donald Trump during their meetings and why he failed to send Indian aircraft to bring back deported citizens with dignity.
Mann also raised concerns over national security, pointing out that a foreign military aircraft had been allowed to land at an airport just 40 kilometers from India’s border with Pakistan. He warned that this move posed a potential security risk, yet the central government remained indifferent. Demanding answers from the Ministry of External Affairs, Mann questioned why Amritsar was consistently chosen for these deportation landings when India has several other international airports. He also accused the Centre of discrimination, stating that Punjab’s requests for international flights from Amritsar were often rejected on flimsy grounds, yet the same airport was being used to land deportation flights.
The Punjab government, Mann emphasized, is taking strict action against illegal travel agents responsible for sending vulnerable Indian citizens abroad through fraudulent means. He assured that those who deceived innocent individuals into illegal migration would face exemplary punishment to serve as a deterrent.
The Chief Minister also stated that comprehensive arrangements had been made at Amritsar airport to accommodate the arriving deportees. He assured that all necessary measures were in place to ensure their safe return home. Additionally, Mann reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to rehabilitating the deported individuals by providing them with appropriate opportunities to rebuild their lives. He pledged that no effort would be spared in assisting them as they reintegrate into society.
