Farmer Leader Bhupinder Singh Mann Calls for Constructive Dialogue and Cautions Against Misguided Protests

Chandigarh, February 16, 2024: Renowned farmer leader and former Member of Parliament, S. Bhupinder Singh Mann, issued a statement today expressing his concerns about the ongoing protests and urging for a more constructive approach.

Commending Punjab CM’s Efforts and Criticizing Haryana’s Approach:

Mann lauded the efforts of the Punjab Chief Minister in seeking solutions to the issues at hand. However, he expressed deep concern regarding the “heavy-handed approach” adopted by the Haryana government towards young protestors from Punjab. He urged the Haryana government to adopt a more lenient approach towards these individuals, whom he believes have been misled by self-serving political actors.

Exposing “Shameful Charade” of Misleading Leaders:

Mann strongly condemned the tactics of certain “so-called farmer leaders” who, according to him, are manipulating the situation for their own political gain. He accused them of exploiting the sentiments of farmers and using them as pawns in their power struggles. He further warned against their attempts to fabricate narratives and sow discord, echoing their actions during previous agitations.

Highlighting the Detrimental Impact of Protests:

Mann emphasized the negative consequences of these continuous protests on Punjab’s economy, finances, and overall image. He pointed out the detrimental effects on job creation, leading to youth exodus and a worsening drug problem within the state. He also expressed concern about the flight of industries from Punjab due to the perceived hostile environment, posing a significant threat to the state’s economic stability, particularly in its role as a border state.

Welcoming Dialogue and Urging Open-mindedness:

While acknowledging the positive step of initiating dialogue by the Central Government, Mann urged the protesting leaders to engage in the process with “open minds and logic,” abandoning the “arrogance and timidity” he believes they displayed in the past. He emphasized the need for constructive dialogue to address the concerns effectively and avoid further harm to the state and its people.
