Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav Launches Public Outreach Initiative under ‘Safe Neighbourhood’ Campaign in Mohali
In a major effort to enhance police-public relations as part of the ‘Safe Neighbourhood’ campaign, Punjab’s Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav initiated a comprehensive public meeting initiative on Wednesday. The program aims to address key security concerns, gather direct feedback on police performance, and foster collaboration between the police and the community.
The first meeting, held at Phase 11 in Mohali, saw DGP Yadav, along with DIG Ropar Range Nilambari Jagdale and SSP SAS Nagar Deepak Pareek, engage in an open dialogue with representatives from various Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs). The residents raised concerns about the shortage of police personnel in Mohali, lack of outreach by SHOs, traffic congestion, insufficient CCTV surveillance, tenant verification, petty crime increases, and vendor encroachments.
DGP Yadav reassured the residents that their concerns were valid and promised immediate action, emphasizing Punjab Police’s commitment to community-centric policing. He announced several on-the-spot measures, including the deployment of additional forces for route and VIP security, enhanced police presence in crime hotspots, strengthening the beat system with coordination from chowkidars and security guards, and a 200-police personnel increase in Mohali.
To alleviate traffic congestion, DGP Yadav directed the SSP to conduct a comprehensive Traffic Engineering Survey and crime mapping to address crime hotspots and drug sale points. He also committed to intensifying CCTV camera coverage in critical areas and setting up control rooms for real-time monitoring.
Additionally, a crackdown on overspeeding and drunken driving was ordered, with a focus on road safety. DGP Yadav highlighted the importance of transparency and announced that police personnel would soon be equipped with body-worn cameras.
Promising results within a month, DGP Yadav instructed SSP Pareek to hold a follow-up meeting with the RWAs to provide a progress report. He assured the public, “We are starting work on your feedback today, and you will see outcomes within a month.”
The DGP also made a surprise visit to the Phase 11 Police Station in Mohali, inspecting the infrastructure and interacting with both the staff and the public to understand their issues firsthand. He later visited the SAANJH Kendra, reinforcing the police department’s focus on community outreach.
