This year, the political landscape in Punjab witnessed significant shifts with the Congress emerging victorious in 7 seats, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) securing 3 seats, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) winning 2 seats, and independent candidates bagging 2 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), however, failed to secure any seat in the state, marking a significant setback.

Election Results

Amritsar: Gurjit Singh Aujla from Congress won with a margin of 40,301 votes.
Anandpur Sahib: Malwinder Singh Kang of AAP emerged victorious with 10,846 votes.

Patiala: Dr. Dharamvira Gandhi from Congress won with 14,831 votes.
Sangrur: AAP’s Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer emerged victorious with 172,560 votes.

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab, despite its dominant position in state politics, managed to secure only three Lok Sabha seats. This performance was significantly below Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s target of winning all 13 parliamentary constituencies in the state. The AAP’s victories came in Hoshiarpur, Anandpur Sahib, and Sangrur. Interestingly, Punjab was the only state where AAP managed to win seats, as the party did not secure any seats in New Delhi or other states.

A notable development in this election was the victory of jailed radical leader and self-styled Khalistan activist Amritpal Singh from Khadoor Sahib and Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa from Faridkot. Amritpal Singh, currently lodged in Dibrugarh Jail, Assam under the National Security Act (NSA), won by the highest margin in the state, defeating his nearest rival from Congress by 197,120 votes. Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, son of Beant Singh, one of the assassins of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, also secured a significant victory in Faridkot, beating his AAP rival by 70,053 votes.

The Congress party showed a strong performance by winning 7 out of the 13 seats. This was a significant improvement compared to their previous tally. The Congress secured seats in Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Firozpur, Patiala, and Gurdaspur. The party’s success can be attributed to its effective campaign strategy and strong voter base in these regions.

The BJP failed to win any seats in Punjab, marking a complete wipeout in the state. However, the party did manage to secure a higher vote share (18.56%) compared to the SAD (13.42%). This performance was a significant drop from their previous elections where they had a notable presence in Punjab.

The voter turnout in Punjab was marked by a significant participation of the electorate, including those who traveled back to their hometowns to cast their votes. This high engagement level reflects the voters’ interest and commitment to shaping the political future of the state.

The results of this Lok Sabha election in Punjab highlight a few critical trends. Firstly, the dominance of traditional parties like Congress and the resilience of regional parties like SAD and AAP. Secondly, the emergence of independent candidates with radical backgrounds points towards a complex voter sentiment in certain regions. Lastly, the BJP’s performance suggests a need for a strategic reevaluation in the state.

The election outcome ensures that Punjab will witness a diverse representation in the Lok Sabha, with varied interests and agendas being brought to the forefront. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it will be interesting to observe how these dynamics influence future elections and governance in Punjab.

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Punjab have set the stage for an interesting political scenario, with Congress leading the way, AAP and SAD maintaining their foothold, and independent candidates making surprising inroads. The results underscore the ever-changing political landscape of Punjab and the varied voter sentiment that shapes it.
