Punjab Police busts inter-state arms smuggling racket; 2 persons arrested with 6 pistols
Convicts were in touch with US-based criminal unit and received arms consignments from Madhya Pradesh on their instructions: DGP Gaurav Yadav
Two other module members were also nominated under the charge of supplying arms to gangsters, raids are being conducted by police teams to nab them.
Chandigarh/Jalandhar, May 9:
Counter Intelligence (CI) Jalandhar acting on a tip-off has busted an inter-state arms smuggling racket and arrested two smugglers. 6 pistols including five .32 bore pistols and seven cartridges including one .30 bore pistol have been recovered from the possession of these convicts. This information was given here today by Director General (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav of Punjab Police.
The arrested persons have been identified as Harpreet Singh alias Happy Mattu resident of Raia and Rahul Masih resident of village Chawinda Devi, Amritsar.
DGP Gaurav Yadav said that preliminary investigation has revealed that this racket was operating on a rampant basis and had received four large consignments of arms from Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh in the last six months. He further said that the module members were in touch with a US-based criminal unit and used to receive consignments of arms on its instructions.
He said that the police teams have identified two other key members of this module and nominated them to supply arms to the gangsters. The DGP said that police teams are conducting raids to nab them, while further investigation is being done to connect the next-to-last links in this regard.
Sharing more details about the operation, AIG CI Jalandhar Navjot Singh Mahal said that while acting quickly on intelligence information, C.I. Police teams of Jalandhar during a joint operation with Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) SAS Nagar set up a special checkpoint near railway station Jalandhar Cantonment and nabbed the said culprits.
Regarding this FIR no. 27 has been registered under Sections 25 and 25 (8) of the Arms Act on 07.05.2024 at Police Station State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) Amritsar.
