Punjab Police Cracks Down on Cross-Border Drug Smuggling: 6.6kg Heroin and ₹6 Lakh Seized, Woman Among Two Arrested
In a significant operation against cross-border drug smuggling networks, the Punjab Police, acting under the directives of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, have arrested two individuals, including a woman, in Ferozepur. The arrests led to the seizure of 6.65kg of heroin and ₹6 lakh in drug money, highlighting the state’s ongoing battle against narcotics.
The accused, identified as Simran Kaur alias Indu, 38, from Moga, and Gurjot Singh, 28, from Jaimal Wala, Moga, were apprehended by the Ferozepur Police. Both have a history of criminal activity, with Simran Kaur previously facing charges in at least 15 cases related to the NDPS Act, Prisons Act, and others.
Punjab’s Director General of Police (DGP), Gaurav Yadav, disclosed that the arrests were made following a tip-off about a drug consignment that had been dropped via drone from across the border. The duo was reportedly en route to deliver the drugs when they were intercepted by police teams from the CIA Ferozepur unit. The arrests were made at a naka (checkpoint) on Old Mudki Road, where the police seized the heroin and drug money concealed in their Toyota Innova car.
The vehicle, bearing registration number DL12CC6003, has also been impounded as part of the investigation. DGP Yadav emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, with efforts focused on identifying the forward and backward linkages of this smuggling network.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ferozepur, Saumya Mishra, elaborated on the operation, stating that the arrest and seizure were made possible through meticulous technical inputs. The police are currently working to identify the Pakistan-based smuggler responsible for sending the consignment and the intended recipients of the drugs in India.
Further actions include initiating the process to forfeit the illegally acquired properties of the arrested individuals under Section 68F of the NDPS Act. A case has been registered at Police Station Ghal Khurd in Ferozepur under FIR no. 59, dated 7-8-2024, for further legal proceedings.
