The Punjab Government has taken a decisive step by dismissing Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gursher Singh Sandhu for allegedly tarnishing the reputation of the police force. The dismissal stems from his alleged involvement in facilitating a televised interview with notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi while Bishnoi was in custody at the Central Investigation Agency (CIA) in Kharar, back in March 2023. This high-profile case has drawn sharp criticism and raised questions about accountability within law enforcement.
The Home Affairs Department issued the dismissal orders following the approval of the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC), the appointing body for officials in the Punjab Police Service (PPS) cadre. The orders cite the findings of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which concluded that Sandhu had enabled the interview, leading to severe reputational damage to the police department. Sandhu, under suspension since October 2024, was accused of misconduct, negligence, and dereliction of duty.
Lawrence Bishnoi, a key figure in the Sidhu Moosewala murder case and accused in over 80 other criminal cases, became the center of controversy when the interview aired. Despite the incident taking place nearly two years ago, a prolonged investigation delayed action until the High Court’s intervention demanded strict accountability.
In addition to Sandhu’s dismissal, six other police officials, including another DSP, have been suspended and issued show-cause notices. The Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab underscored the damage caused by such actions, stating that they severely dent the credibility of the department.
This case highlights a troubling breach of protocol and the challenges faced in maintaining the integrity of law enforcement institutions. The government’s firm response reflects its commitment to upholding transparency and accountability in public service.
