Punjab Police Secures Extradition of Nabha Jailbreak Mastermind Ramanjit Singh Romy from Hong Kong

Chandigarh, August 22: The Punjab Police has successfully extradited Ramanjit Singh, alias Romy, the mastermind behind the infamous Nabha jailbreak of 2016, from Hong Kong. This development marks a significant milestone in an extensive international operation aimed at delivering justice. The extradition was executed by the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) of the Punjab Police, under the directives of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.

Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab, Gaurav Yadav, announced the return of Romy, stating, “After tireless efforts by the Punjab Police, Romy, the key conspirator in the Nabha jailbreak, is being brought back today to face justice. He was previously in contact with the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and other fugitives, including Harminder Singh Mintu and Kashmir Singh Galwaddi of the Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF).”

Romy’s extradition follows a long legal process that began in 2018. Punjab Police issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) and a Red Corner Notice (RCN) against Romy, who had fled abroad following the jailbreak. The extradition process was conducted under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Hong Kong’s Special Administrative Region. The case was rigorously presented to Hong Kong’s Department of Justice and the Hon’ble Courts, resulting in the Chief Executive of Hong Kong ordering Romy’s surrender on August 6, 2024.

The Nabha jailbreak, which occurred on November 27, 2016, was a brazen attack in which gangsters disguised as police officers stormed the high-security Nabha Jail and freed six dangerous criminals: Harminder Singh Mintu, Gurpreet Singh Sekhon, Amandeep Singh Dhotian, Kulpreet Singh alias Neeta Deol, Kashmir Singh alias Galwaddi, and Harjinder Singh alias Vicky Gonder. Vicky Gonder was later neutralized by Punjab Police in Rajasthan on January 26, 2018. Romy, a key player in the Shera Khuban/Vicky Gonder gang, was crucial in facilitating the jailbreak by providing logistical support, including financial aid, weapons, fake IDs, and safe houses.

DGP Gaurav Yadav praised the AGTF team, led by ADGP Promod Ban, for their relentless pursuit and meticulous operations that culminated in this international cooperation. He also extended gratitude to the Hong Kong authorities, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and all central agencies involved.

The successful extradition of Romy underscores the Punjab Police’s commitment to justice and highlights the effectiveness of international cooperation in tackling cross-border crime. The return of Romy to India is expected to aid in further investigations and legal proceedings related to the Nabha jailbreak.
