Punjab Shines in 2024 with Unprecedented Achievements in Sports under CM Bhagwant Mann’s Leadership

Punjab has set a new benchmark in sports excellence under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, making 2024 a landmark year for the state. A spokesperson from the Chief Minister’s Office attributed this success to the implementation of a transformative sports policy introduced in 2023, designed to make Punjab a leader in the realm of sports and nurture a vibrant sports culture.

The spokesperson highlighted that 19 athletes from Punjab, including 10 hockey players, six shooters, two athletes, and one golfer, represented India at the Paris Olympics in 2024. Additionally, Punjab sent three exceptional participants to the Paris Paralympics, featuring a para-athlete, a para-badminton player, and a para-powerlifter. Demonstrating unwavering support for its athletes, the Punjab government provided financial aid of ₹15 lakh each to 22 players, totaling ₹3.30 crore, to ensure their optimal preparation.

A historic moment for Punjab came when the Indian hockey team clinched the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, with eight players from the state contributing to this achievement. Each player was rewarded ₹1 crore, while two reserve players received ₹15 lakh each. Olympians and Paralympians from Punjab were also awarded ₹15 lakh each. In total, the government disbursed ₹13.10 crore for athlete preparation, participation, and recognition. Notably, Indian hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh, a proud son of Punjab, emerged as the Olympics’ top scorer with 10 goals, bringing unparalleled glory to the state.

Taking a progressive step towards athlete welfare, the government offered prominent sports personalities secure futures through public service jobs. Eleven players, including nine hockey stars, were appointed to key positions, with four becoming PCS officers and five designated as DSPs. Additionally, an athlete and a cricketer were also appointed to significant roles.

To solidify Punjab’s position as a sports powerhouse, the state launched an ambitious project to establish 1,000 sports nurseries. The first phase began in 2024 with the development of 260 nurseries aimed at providing top-tier coaching, equipment, and infrastructure for budding athletes.

In another remarkable initiative, Punjab organized the third edition of its flagship sports event, ‘Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan,’ in 2024. The event saw participation from nearly five lakh athletes across 37 sports categories and nine age groups. For the first time, para-sports were included, reflecting the state’s commitment to inclusivity and providing equal opportunities for all athletes.

Punjab’s extraordinary focus on sports in 2024 underlines the state’s commitment to fostering talent, supporting athletes, and promoting a robust sports culture, setting an inspiring example for the entire nation.
