Punjab’s Stubble Burning Declines, But Regional Air Quality Remains a Concern

Punjab’s Stubble Burning on the Decline

Punjab, a state notorious for its annual stubble burning practices, has seen a significant reduction in farm fire incidents this year. According to the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), between September 15 and November 17, 2024, Punjab reported 8,404 farm fire events. This figure marks a five-year low, reflecting a positive trend in the state’s efforts to curb this environmentally harmful practice.

Regional Air Quality Concerns

While Punjab’s efforts have been commendable, the broader regional air quality remains a cause for concern. Delhi, in particular, has been grappling with severe air pollution, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) consistently breaching the ‘severe’ category. This alarming situation has led to the implementation of stringent measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), including school closures, traffic restrictions, and industrial curbs.

Factors Contributing to Regional Air Pollution

Several factors contribute to the deteriorating air quality in the region:

  1. Stubble Burning in Neighboring States: While Punjab has reduced its contribution, states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan continue to grapple with significant stubble burning incidents. The prevailing winds often carry the pollutants from these states to Delhi and its neighboring regions.
  2. Industrial Emissions: Industrial activities, particularly in the National Capital Region (NCR), release substantial amounts of pollutants into the atmosphere.
  3. Vehicular Emissions: The increasing number of vehicles on the roads, especially diesel-powered ones, contributes to the worsening air quality.
  4. Meteorological Conditions: Adverse meteorological conditions, such as low wind speeds and temperature inversions, trap pollutants near the ground, leading to a buildup of pollution.

Impact on Public Health

The severe air pollution poses a significant threat to public health. Exposure to polluted air can lead to a range of respiratory and cardiovascular problems, including asthma, bronchitis, lung cancer, and heart disease. Children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of air pollution.

  1. Strict Enforcement of Pollution Control Laws: Stricter enforcement of pollution control laws and regulations is crucial to curb emissions from industries and vehicles.
  2. Promotion of Cleaner Technologies: Encouraging the adoption of cleaner technologies, such as electric vehicles and renewable energy sources, can significantly reduce air pollution.
  3. Public Awareness Campaigns: Public awareness campaigns can educate people about the harmful effects of air pollution and encourage them to adopt eco-friendly practices.
  4. Regional Cooperation: Regional cooperation among states is essential to address the transboundary nature of air pollution. Joint efforts to control pollution sources and implement effective mitigation measures are crucial.

By taking concerted action, it is possible to improve air quality and protect public health.
