Rahul Gandhi Leads Fierce Defense of Constitution in 18th Lok Sabha, Accuses Modi Government of Undermining Democracy”

On Monday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a vehement criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing them of undermining the Indian Constitution. As the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha commenced, Gandhi emphasized the resolve of the Opposition-led INDIA bloc to defend the Constitution against perceived threats. Displaying a copy of the Constitution as a symbol of resistance, Gandhi declared, “No power can touch the Constitution.” In a unified demonstration of strength, MPs from the INDIA bloc gathered in the Parliament complex, brandishing copies of the Constitution and chanting pro-democracy slogans. This assembly featured prominent leaders such as Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Trinamool Congress’s Sudip Bandyopadhyay, and DMK’s TR Baalu, who convened at the newly designated Prerna Sthal, where the Gandhi statue now stands along with 14 other relocated statues from the complex.

Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi also joined the assembly, reinforcing the bloc’s solidarity. Holding copies of the Constitution, the MPs chanted slogans like “Long live Constitution,” “We will save the Constitution,” and “Save our democracy.” Gandhi stressed that the opposition would not permit any actions that compromise the Constitution, asserting, “The attack that the Prime Minister and Amit Shah are launching on the Constitution is not acceptable to us. We will not let this happen. So, we held the Constitution while taking the oath. Our message is going across, and no power can touch the Constitution of India.”

Gandhi’s remarks were a response to Prime Minister Modi’s earlier comments, in which he criticized the Congress for the Emergency imposed in 1975 by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, describing it as a “black spot” on democracy. On June 25, 1975, Indira Gandhi, a significant figure in the Congress, declared an Emergency, suspending civil liberties, imprisoning Opposition leaders, and enforcing press censorship. This historical reference added a layer of tension to the current political discourse, as Gandhi sought to draw a parallel between past and present threats to democratic principles.

The repercussions of this confrontation are significant, highlighting the deepening rift between the ruling party and the opposition. The INDIA bloc’s public display of unity and defiance signals a strategic move to mobilize public opinion and strengthen their stance against the Modi government’s policies. This event underscores the ongoing struggle within Indian politics to uphold democratic values and constitutional integrity, reflecting a broader narrative of political accountability and governance.

The INDIA bloc’s actions and Gandhi’s assertive rhetoric are likely to resonate with voters concerned about the preservation of democratic norms, potentially influencing future electoral dynamics. As the political landscape evolves, the defense of the Constitution will remain a central theme, shaping the discourse around governance and civil liberties in India. The opposition’s commitment to this cause is poised to drive their legislative and electoral strategies, aiming to present a formidable challenge to the Modi administration.

This unfolding scenario emphasizes the critical role of the Constitution as the bedrock of Indian democracy, with political leaders from across the spectrum vying to champion its principles. The outcome of this ideological battle will significantly impact the future of democratic governance in India, underscoring the enduring importance of constitutional fidelity in the nation’s political ethos.
