Record-Breaking Heat in Chandigarh and North India: Wildlife Suffer as Parchh Dam Dries Up
Chandigarh and North India are facing unprecedented heat waves, with temperatures soaring up to 46 degrees Celsius. The administration has shown little empathy towards the wildlife suffering from this extreme heat, leading to a tragic situation where animals are dying from lack of water. Nature will undoubtedly hold humans accountable for these atrocities.
The intense heat in North India is causing severe distress not just to humans but also to wildlife. Many areas are experiencing drought-like conditions. In Mohali, near Chandigarh, the Parchh Dam at the base of the Shivalik Hills has completely dried up. This has left local wildlife without water, causing many to die of thirst. The dam, which usually supplies water to surrounding villages and sustains thousands of wild animals, has turned barren with large cracks and scattered animal skeletons. Over the past three months, more than 500 animals have perished.
In response, local residents have taken matters into their own hands. Community members have started bringing water in tankers to fill small ponds and tanks for the wildlife. This grassroots effort has significantly reduced the number of daily animal deaths. Despite this, there has been no governmental assistance. Timely desilting and maintenance of the dam could have prevented this crisis, highlighting a failure in administrative action.
The primary reason for the dam drying up is the extreme heat, which has evaporated all water sources in the forest. However, administrative negligence also plays a role, as there was no effort to maintain water levels or desilt the dam.
