Reviving the Sacred Saraswati River: 80% Land Acquisition Complete for Rejuvenation Efforts, Says Union Minister Manohar Lal

Union Minister of Power, Manohar Lal, emphasized that the efforts to bring the sacred Saraswati River back to Haryana’s land began in 1986. These significant efforts led to the establishment of the Haryana Saraswati Heritage Development Board ten years ago. Over this decade, the board has successfully acquired or received 80% of the land through donations or purchases along the river’s path, a crucial step in reviving the sacred waterway. Once the land acquisition process is complete, the long-awaited revival of the Saraswati River will become a reality.

Union Minister Manohar Lal was speaking at the closing ceremony of the International Saraswati Festival, organized by the Haryana Saraswati Heritage Development Board at the Pihowa Saraswati Tirth. Prior to the event, the minister visited the board’s exhibition and the Saras Mela, while also inaugurating the cultural evening. During the event, he extended his warm wishes for Basant Panchami and Saraswati Jayanti to the people of Haryana.

The Union Minister highlighted the deep cultural significance of rivers, stating that they have been revered as sacred for thousands of years, with nature’s five elements—land, sky, air, fire, and water—always worshipped as deities. By honoring these elements, society fosters positive values, which in turn build strong foundations for a prosperous nation. Keeping this cultural legacy alive and ensuring the younger generation connects with their heritage is the purpose behind organizing festivals like the International Saraswati Festival and the Geeta Festival.

Emphasizing the historical importance of the Saraswati River, he said that the sacred river that once flowed through Haryana was the birthplace of many sacred texts, including the Vedas and Puranas. In recognition of this, the state government renamed Bilaspur as Vyaspur, after Sage Vyasa, and Mustajapur as Saraswati Nagar. Furthermore, satellite imagery and scientific studies have confirmed that the Saraswati River’s course ran from Adi Badri through Haryana to the Rann of Kutch. This discovery was first explored in 1986 when Dr. Wankadkar undertook a journey from Adi Badri to Pihowa, spanning three days.

The Union Minister described the region as ‘Dev Bhoomi’ (Land of the Gods) and expressed the government’s continuous efforts to preserve and revitalize its fading history and culture. Ongoing research on the Saraswati River’s course will continue, with programs like this festival aiming to spread awareness and awaken public interest in the rich cultural legacy of the area.
