Rising Water Levels in Pong Dam Amid Heavy Rainfall: Residents Urged to Stay Vigilant
In Himachal Pradesh, the continuous heavy rainfall has caused water levels in the Pong Dam to rise significantly, although they remain 46 feet below the danger mark. As of 6 p.m. today, the water level in the Pong Dam is recorded at 1344.06 feet, which is about 31 feet lower compared to the same date last year when the level was 1375.45 feet.
The current inflow into the dam stands at 103,824 cubic meters per second, while the outflow is 55 cubic meters per second, directed into the Mukerian Hydel Canal. The increasing water levels have prompted the need for vigilance as the dam’s water levels approach the critical threshold. The danger mark for the Pong Dam is set at 1390 feet, meaning there is still a margin of 46 feet before reaching this critical level.
The Meteorological Department has forecasted continued cloudy conditions in the sky, indicating that the region may experience further rainfall. Residents are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions, especially those living in areas downstream or near water bodies. The constant rise in water levels can lead to potential flooding and waterlogging, which could affect daily life and infrastructure.
In adjoining Punjab, where areas near the Himachal Pradesh border are also experiencing heavy rainfall, similar precautions are essential. Residents in Punjab should remain vigilant and follow local advisories, as the overflow from the Pong Dam could impact nearby regions. It is advisable to avoid traveling near rivers and streams, monitor weather updates, and be prepared for possible disruptions due to adverse weather. Public safety measures and emergency plans should be reviewed to ensure readiness in case of sudden flooding or water-related emergencies.
Authorities in both Himachal Pradesh and Punjab are monitoring the situation closely and have issued warnings to ensure public safety. It is crucial for individuals to stay informed through local news and official advisories, and to follow safety protocols to protect themselves and their property during this period of severe weather.
