Ludhiana, December 5: Renowned actress and social activist Sonia Mann was arrested on Tuesday while leading a protest against the severe industrial pollution contaminating Budha Nallah and the Sutlej River. The demonstration aimed to spotlight the unchecked release of untreated industrial wastewater from Ludhiana’s factories, which has wreaked havoc on the environment and public health.
The protesters alleged that rampant industrial discharge into Budha Nallah has polluted water sources, causing widespread health problems, including skin diseases and even skin cancer, among the affected communities.
Addressing the media before her arrest, Sonia Mann remarked, “This is not just an environmental issue but a humanitarian disaster. The toxic water flowing into the Sutlej River endangers our health and the lives of future generations. Immediate accountability and action are crucial.”
The protest intensified with slogans demanding stricter government oversight and immediate action. Authorities intervened and detained Sonia Mann along with other protesters at the Dogri police station, citing public order disruptions.
Her arrest has ignited a social media storm, with environmental advocates and supporters rallying for her release and urging tougher measures against industrial polluters. Activists vowed to continue the fight for sustainable water management and pollution control to protect Punjab’s water bodies and public health.
