Surajkund International Crafts Fair 2025: A Grand Celebration of Art, Culture, and Entrepreneurship

The 38th Surajkund International Crafts Fair, set in the picturesque Aravalli Hills of Faridabad, has been drawing a massive influx of domestic and international tourists since its inauguration on February 7. The fair, a vibrant confluence of art, culture, and entrepreneurship, will conclude on February 23. This year’s grand opening was graced by Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Shekhawat, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, and Minister for Heritage and Tourism Dr. Arvind Kumar Sharma. The event will culminate with a grand closing ceremony officiated by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

Visitors are flocking to the fairgrounds in large numbers, mesmerized by the intricate craftsmanship and cultural vibrancy showcased by artisans from across India and beyond. As the sun sets, the energy within the fair intensifies, with throngs of tourists exploring the colorful stalls, enjoying folk performances, and immersing themselves in the artistic grandeur of the event. From traditional craft displays to live demonstrations by skilled artisans, the fair has become a paradise for those seeking an authentic cultural experience. The younger generation, in particular, has shown keen interest in various handmade products, engaging with artisans to learn about their craftsmanship.

Adding to the charm of the fair are the numerous selfie points scattered throughout the venue, drawing in photography enthusiasts eager to capture memories of this grand event. The amusement park, located near the Maha Chaupal, has also been a major attraction, with visitors enjoying thrilling rides and dancing to the rhythms of folk music played on traditional instruments. The food courts have been a gastronomic delight, offering an array of delectable dishes from different states, catering to the diverse palates of the visitors.

Beyond being a celebration of culture, the fair has also emerged as a platform for empowering women entrepreneurs. Under the Rural Development Ministry’s SARAS Aajeevika Mission, the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ initiative has taken center stage, showcasing the entrepreneurial journey of self-help groups from across the country. Women artisans from Bihar, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Sikkim, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh have set up stalls selling handmade sarees, suits, bedsheets, utensils, and a variety of food items, including biscuits and laddoos made from millets. Among them is Suman from Panchkula, who has successfully transformed her life through the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme. After securing a loan of ₹5 lakh, she established her own business with a group of ten women. Today, she not only runs a profitable enterprise but also provides employment to others, proving that financial self-sufficiency is achievable through skill and determination.

The Haryana government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, is committed to empowering women through various financial literacy programs, skill development initiatives, and livelihood assistance. Heritage and Tourism Minister Dr. Arvind Kumar Sharma envisions this fair as an educational platform for the youth, where they can gain valuable insights into traditional crafts and skill-based employment opportunities. The government’s objective is to strengthen these women entrepreneurs, guiding them towards financial independence and sustainable business growth.

The evenings at Surajkund have been transformed into mesmerizing cultural spectacles, with performances by renowned national and international artists. A major highlight was the soulful Sufi night by A.R. Rahman’s KM Sufi Ensemble Group at the Maha Chaupal, which enchanted the audience with its mystical renditions. The group performed iconic pieces such as Khwaja Mere Khwaja, Ae Mere Daata Ae Mere Maula, Ali Maula Ali Maula, and Piya Haji Ali, leaving the audience spellbound. The performers expressed their gratitude to the Haryana government for inviting them to this grand event, acknowledging the efforts of Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Tourism Minister Dr. Arvind Kumar Sharma in promoting cultural heritage.

The significance of this festival extends far beyond entertainment. It is a testament to India’s rich artistic heritage, an economic catalyst for local artisans, and a means to preserve traditional craftsmanship in the face of modernization. By providing a platform for artisans and entrepreneurs to showcase their work to a global audience, the Surajkund International Crafts Fair is fostering a culture of appreciation for handmade artistry. The consequences of neglecting such initiatives would be detrimental to the livelihoods of thousands of artisans who rely on such fairs for sustenance. Without proper support, traditional crafts face the risk of fading into oblivion, replaced by mass-produced alternatives that lack the authenticity and soul of handmade artistry.

Through this grand event, Haryana continues to uphold its legacy as a state that celebrates its rich heritage while paving the way for economic empowerment and sustainable development. As the fair continues to captivate visitors, it reaffirms the importance of preserving culture, promoting entrepreneurship, and creating a bridge between tradition and modernity.
