Dharamshala, (Arvind Sharma) May 27, 2023

Kishan Kapoor, the Member of Parliament representing the Kangra-Chamba Lok Sabha constituency, released a press statement regarding the permission granted for the construction of the first phase of the North Campus of Central University Dharamshala at Jadrangal. The Ministry of Environment, Government of India’s Consultative Committee has approved the use of 57.10 hectares of forest land for this purpose. Kapoor expressed satisfaction over this decision, which had been pending for the past decade, and expressed hope that the construction work would commence soon, leading to the development of various faculties on the Dharamshala campus.

Kapoor highlighted his efforts in raising the issue during the Parliament session, where he brought up the construction of the Central University in Dharamshala during the Question Hour. He also had meetings with the Union Education Minister and Union Environment Minister to discuss the matter. Kapoor expressed happiness that his endeavors have yielded positive results.

nIn February of this year, Chief Minister of Himachal Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu raised the issue of constructing the permanent campus of the Central University of Himachal Pradesh in Kangra district with the central government. Then Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan assured that the work would commence soon. However, over the past 14 years, the Central University has been awaiting the construction of its permanent campus, with delays in site selection and land transfer impeding progress. The establishment of the Central University of Himachal Pradesh was announced by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in his address to the nation on August 15, 2007. The Central University Act 2009, which received presidential assent on March 20, 2009, facilitated the establishment of the Central University of Himachal Pradesh, among others. The state government subsequently decided to have two campuses, one in Dharamshala and another in Dehra, with available land of 115 hectares in Dehra and 98 acres at Jadrangal in Dharamshala for the construction of these campuses. The construction of the permanent campus is yet to be initiated.
