Tragic End for AAP Leader Gurpreet Bassi Gogi; Gunshot Incident Under Investigation 

Ludhiana West MLA and Aam Aadmi Party leader Gurpreet Bassi Gogi has passed away after suffering a fatal gunshot injury in a tragic incident at his residence late Friday night. Preliminary police reports suggest the possibility of an accidental discharge from his own licensed pistol. The bullet pierced his temple around 11:30 pm, prompting immediate efforts to rush him to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.

Joint Commissioner of Police Jaskaran Singh Teja stated that according to initial statements from family members, the incident appears to be accidental. Authorities have kept the body at DMCH’s mortuary, and a detailed post-mortem examination will shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the incident. Gogi is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.

The shocking development has sent waves of grief through Punjab’s political circles, with leaders expressing their condolences. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann shared his sorrow on X, mourning the loss of “a very good person” and extending heartfelt sympathy to Gogi’s family. Punjab AAP president Aman Arora expressed his grief, hoping for strength for the bereaved family and peace for the departed soul.

Hours before the tragic event, Gogi had actively participated in key political engagements, including a meeting with Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and AAP MP Balbir Singh Seechewal on cleaning efforts for Buddha Nullah, a polluted drain in Ludhiana. Earlier in the day, Gogi visited the Prachin Sheetla Mata Mandir in BRS Nagar following a theft and assured timely justice.

Gogi’s political journey took a significant turn in 2022 when he left the Congress after more than two decades to join the Aam Aadmi Party. That year, he made headlines by arriving on a scooter—his “lucky scooter,” gifted by his mother—to file his nomination papers for the state assembly elections. Gogi successfully contested from the Ludhiana West seat, defeating two-time MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu.

Before his legislative role, Gogi served as a municipal councillor twice in Ludhiana and held the position of Chairman of the Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation during the Congress regime. His tenure as Ludhiana district Congress (urban) president spanned from 2014 to 2019. Gogi’s contributions extended to various civic issues, including his vocal criticism of delays in the Buddha Nullah rejuvenation project, where he famously demolished its foundation stone in frustration over administrative delays.

His wife, Sukhchain Kaur Gogi, contested the recent municipal corporation elections but did not secure victory. Despite the loss, Gogi’s family maintained a strong connection with Ludhiana’s civic landscape.

Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring expressed profound grief over Gogi’s passing, describing it as a tragic and shocking loss. Political leaders and supporters continue to visit Gogi’s Ludhiana residence to extend their condolences to the grieving family.

As investigations proceed, the untimely demise of Gurpreet Bassi Gogi marks a heartbreaking moment in Punjab’s political history, leaving a void in both the Aam Aadmi Party and Ludhiana’s community leadership.
